This depends a lot on the weather conditions but ideally this would be at least 3 hours after the first layer and within 24 hours. Of course, this is more a guideline than a strict deadline.

The colours are not exactly matched with the Hybrid Wood Protector, but for the natural colours we offer similar alternatives. You can also do a test on identical sanded wood with one or more of our 30 ml packagings. For testing colours on a regular basis, our DuroGrit sample kit containing all colours in 30 ml is perfect.

Even though it would be technically possible to use DuroGrit for interior woodwork, we do not recommend this. The product is developped for an exterior environment:

It contains a small amount of biocides to prevent fungi.
Unlike Oil Plus 2C, DuroGrit roughens the wood a bit.
With Oil Plus 2C you can have a much smoother, cleaner and brushmark-free end result, which is more desirable in an interior environment.

DuroGrit is a one layer product. When two or more coats are applied, the UV protection will be improved but the system will also become more film-forming. This might result in typical problems of film-forming systems such as flaking/peeling. In addition, the curing time will also be prolonged.

However, in exceptional cases, e.g. very grey/weathered wood, a second layer might be necessary for aesthetic reasons. The first layer will act as a primer, but due to the high and inequal absorption of the wood, a second layer will provide a more uniform colour result. In these cases we also advise diluting the DuroGrit with 20% of water. The risk of building up a thick film-forming layer here is low, because a lot of the product is absorbed into the weathered wood.

Keep in mind that DuroGrit is a transparant finish. This means spots where the old Hybrid Wood Protector coating is still present, will stay visible.

The WoodCream gives a durable protection with a low consumption which means that we use less resources of raw material per m² and this will lead to lower energy in transport and application. The WoodCream should not be sanded for a touch-up and therefore no sanding dust will come into the environment. And last but not least, the WoodCream is VOC free.

Attention, a transparent version (#0) is also available in order to create a non-coloured effect. This version is an exception and has no UV filter. Since this is the case, Transparent (#0) allows the wood to age naturally while still protecting the wood and making it water-repellent.

If some product is spilled despite this, immediately remove the spilled material from non-targeted areas with soap and water. Product that is allowed to dry will be difficult to remove.

Clean them with water, immediately after use.

After multiple uses, the bristles of the brushes may start to feel a bit “oily” or sitff. In that case, you can clean the brushes also with warm (not hot!) water and mild soap or dish detergent. Another option is to use a bit of Exterior Wood Cleaner and water. The product will come off much faster than with just plain water. Repeat the soaking and swishing process until the water runs clear. Rinse well with clean water.

Small errors can be touched-up on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application, depending on the weather conditions. Apply a bit of extra DuroGrit with a brush. Put some pressure with your brush to dissolve and mix the old product with the new one. Go over it several times and smooth out.

If you are too late and the surface is already dry, you can remove the overlap by lightly manually sanding the product away in the direction of the grain and applying some new product. It is best to do such a correction before the product is completely cured (e.g. during the installation and not a few days later).

Wooden surfaces oiled with Hybrid Wood Protector will require maintenance and attention more often than interior surfaces due to exterior exposure harshness. The geographical location, the wood type and the colour of the oil will dictate the frequency of reoiling!

In general, a horizontal exposed wood substrate will weather approximately four times faster than a vertical exposed substrate in the same location.

Even though we recommend an annual visual check-up, horizontal surfaces like patios and exterior furniture should have maintenance every year, whereas vertical surfaces only every 3 to 5 years.

Maintenance is done with Hybrid Wood Protector in the original colour. Sanding will not be necessary but always clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner prior to applying a new layer of oil.

Consumption strongly depends on the type of wood, weathering and preparation. Old wood, wood that has been left untreated outdoors or grooved wood often absorbs more product. Therefore always purchase slightly more product than the recommended liter per m². You can use the leftover to maintain and touch up the surface with the same product.

In exceptional cases, e.g. on very weathered or highly absorbing wood consumption can be twice as high (even up to 6 m²/liter). In these cases, adding up to maximum 20% water can help control the spread rate.

If a better protection is needed, we would advise you to choose impregnated wood, copper-based (which you can recognize because of its green colour).

If you still want to apply an extra coat of fungicide, we would advise you to use a product with IPBC.

For example, fresh cumaru wood would definitely benefit from a few weeks of weathering to rinse out the extracts that the wood contains. After all, these might soften the coating when they migrate into the wood. Other wood species such as pine or ipé seem to be less sensitive to this.

We recommend that you test your local wood species or send a few samples to our lab to estimate if this is required in your particular situation.

In general we recommend a yearly visual check-up just after winter season. Please check for the presence of the following three points:

a. Dirt & green deposits; clean with low pressure water and soft brush

If necessary (concerning point b./c.) apply a maintenance coat according to the instructions. The frequency of maintenance depends on the weather conditions:

In normal weather conditions: every 5 years
In extreme weather conditions: every 3 years
In ideal circumstances, this can take significantly longer: up to 10 years

Normal climates: when the colour fades, apply a maintenance coat of WoodCream with WoodCream Softener in a ratio from 9 parts WoodCream and 1 part WoodCream Softener to 1 part WoodCream and 1 part WoodCream Softener in order to achieve the desired result. Consult the technical data sheet for more information.

Frequency according to exposure, geographical situation, solar orientation of the treated wood, wood type, and desired shade. Waterfront, seaside, pilling, wetland, marshland, … sometimes require a more frequent maintenance.
