Even though these surfaces aren't directly subjected to mechanical wear and tear, we nevertheless advise to apply 3 layers. The 3 layers are necessary for the UV protection.

Does Oil Plus 2C require a topcoat?

No, Oil Plus 2C offers enough protection. However, an optional extra protection coat with Universal Maintenance Oil can be applied after 36-48 hours (and when the surface is completely dry) in case the surfaces are highly subjected to liquids, mechanical wear and tear (e.g. wooden surfaces in public spaces, bars, restaurants).

How can I achieve a raw wood effect indoors?

Accepted Answer

To achieve a raw wood effect, the recommendations depend on your type of wood.

Even though we have a non-pigmented/transparent variant in the Oil Plus 2C range, called "Pure", this does not quite keep the natural colour for all wood types.

Oil Plus 2C is a linseed oil based product. Linseed oil has a naturally occurring colour to it which will enrich/darken the wood compared to its raw state.

Here are common solutions to neutralise the richening that occurs when applying oil-based finish to a few popular wood types:

White Oak: you can use the colour "Smoke 5%", "Natural" or "White 5%"

Red Oak: you can use Precolor Easy "Mint White" to neutralise the pink/red tones of the red oak and then apply the Oil Plus 2C "White 5%" to it.
Walnut: (because it is so dark on its own) you can use "Pure" to keep it looking as close to unfinished as possible. A slight darkening will occur, but this is typically desired.
Softwood (beech, maple, pine, ...): use Oil Plus 2C "White 5%" or "Natural"
Chestnut: use Oil Plus 2C "Smoke 5%"

If you are looking for an effective solution for all types of wood (including darker wood types) Invisible Protector is a very good alternative.

We always advise to do a test first.

How can I add more sheen to my surface treated with Oil Plus 2C?

SheenPlus can be applied over Oil Plus 2C (after minimum 24 hours) to increase the sheen level. Attention: SheenPlus can't be applied to raw wood.

Read our maintenance and cleaning instructions carefully.

For tannin woods (e.g. oak, chestnut, ...) Tannin Primer can be used before applying Oil Plus 2C for horizontal surfaces often subjected to liquids, such as kitchen worktops or bathroom furniture.

How can I remove excess Oil Plus 2C after it's dry?

You can remove the excess by using a Rubio Monocoat purple GS320 Pad. Go over the surface with this pad to equalise the colour and remove all the excess. Change the pad regularly.

Once this is done, apply a new thin layer of Oil Plus 2C in the original colour.

How can I remove overlapses after having applied Precolor Easy?

Any overlapping can be removed! Spray clean water on the floor and polish with a polisher or scrubby with a red Rubio Monocoat Pad.

Keep in mind that any overlapping WILL NOT be removed when applying the oil. It is important to remove any overlapping areas before applying Oil Plus 2C.

How can I remove tape residue on my surface treated with Oil Plus 2C?

Accepted Answer

If there isn't any discolouration, you can remove the residues with Grease Remover. Afterwards, most probably you'll have re-oil a bit with Oil Plus 2C in the original colour afterwards. If there is discoloration, due to the plasticizers in the tape, use Limespot Remover. Here again, you'll have to re-oil with Oil Plus 2C in the original colour. Tip: make sure you never use tape with plasticizers or softeners in. This will damage the Oil Plus 2C.

How do I know whether the surface is sufficiently dry after treatment?

Accepted Answer

Respect a minimum drying time of 12 to 24 hours while ensuring sufficient ventilation. Afterwards you can use the surface again.

When in doubt, use a cotton cloth and rub an inconspicuous area. If no oil sticks to the cloth, the surface is sufficiently dry.

However, wait until day 5, until the oil has completely cured, to clean with water for the first time. Until then, be careful with liquids.

Although many stains can be removed with Universal Soap, Surface Care, All Natural Wood Cleaner or All Natural Wood Cleaner Spray, Rubio Monocoat also developed a number of specific stain removers. Stubborn lime stains can be handled effectively with Limespot Remover, grease stains with Grease Remover and black/tannin stains with Tannin Remover. If the stain has penetrated the wood too deeply, the spot can be sanded and re-oiled.

First select the most suitable stain remover for your spots.

I might have used too much Pre-Aging and now I have a very unequal color result. What can I do about it?

Accepted Answer

When using Pre-Aging it's really important to smooth out the product and avoid puddle formation. However, you can still fix the problem by equalising the color with a cloth and some acetone. Once done, you can finish off with Oil Plus 2C or Invisible Protector.

I treated my wood with Oil Plus 2C but the colour is very unequal. Why is that and how can I fix it?

Accepted Answer

Unequal colour can be due to several things:

1. Unequal sanding

The smoother the surface, the less oil can penetrate in the wood and the less intense the colour will be. So maybe you haven't sanded the whole surface the same way or you didn't change the sanding paper regularly and because of that the paper was already worn by the end. This means you sanded the last parts much smoother than in the beginning, resulting in a different colour.

Tip: if you're working with an orbital hand sander, make sure you're not pushing too hard and you're not working on the highest setting.

How to fix it? Unfortunately the only option to fix this is by re-sanding the surface until the whole treatment has been removed and then to re-oil.

Tip: After sanding, use WoodPrep. This product will help to minimise sanding errors. The product avoids (or reduces) potential for visible sanding swirls, provides a more consistent and even colour penetration with an uneven finish sanding and a more consistent colour penetration on naturally blotchy wood species (e.g. maple).

2. The excess was not removed sufficiently

It's important that once the oil has made the molecular bonding, you remove all the excess. Otherwise this will result in a sticky non-equal coloured surface that is prone to scratches. Make sure you regularly change the white pad or the cotton cloth you're using to remove the excess.

How to fix it? Use a maroon Rubio Monocoat GS320 pad to remove the bit of excess there might be left on the surface. Go over the whole surface and equalise the colour. Don't forget to change pads regularly. Once you have obtained an equal colour, vacuum thoroughly and re-apply a bit of oil. The consumption will be a lot lower than the first time you treated the surface.

3. The oil wasn't mixed well enough or you used different containers for one job

After a while, pigments will sink to the bottom. Always stir the oil well before use and regularly during application.

How to fix it? Unfortunately the only option to fix this is by re-sanding the surface until the whole treatment has been removed and then to re-oil.

4. Different pathces in the wood

Differences in colour can also be due to the different patterns in the wood. Lighter and darker patches are perfectly normal, it's simply one of the natural characteristics of wood. Oil is a always a transparent finish so it won't hide these differences.

How to fix it? If you wish to hide the natural colour differences of the wood you'll need something more covering than just Oil Plus 2C. You can use a pre-treatment like Precolor Easy which you finish off with Oil Plus 2C. However, if you have already treated the surface with Oil Plus 2C, you'll first have to remove the oil by sanding.

Tip: be careful with dark colours on blotchy wood species (e.g. maple, birch, ...). Dark colours will highlight the different patches in the wood. Use a light colour instead or use WoodPrep after sanding. This will provide a more consistent colour penetration.

Question 20

I want to use Oil Plus 2C to protect my indoor wood but it's not covering enough. How can I achieve a more intense colour?

Accepted Answer

You can achieve a more intense colour through various ways:

- Sanding method: use a lower grit. The smoother the surface is, the less oil and pigments will penetrate in the wood, resulting in a less coloured surface. We recommend using grit 100 for flooring and grit 100 - 150 for furniture, stairs and worktops.

- Use WoodPrep instead of Cleaner.

- Use one of our optional pre-treatments Pre-Aging or Precolor Easy.

Certainly do not try to apply multiple layers. Once the fibres are bonded with the oil, the wood doesn’t absorb any surplus product – which makes a second layer superfluous.

Is Accelerator (Comp. B) required for Oil Plus 2C?

We advise you to add Accelerator in every circumstance. Not only will the oil dry much faster, it will also cure better and faster. The curing process is very important in order to have a strong end result. You can never obtain the same strong protection, wear-, water- and heat resistance without Accelerator.

Technically, this asks if the product is safe to ingest, but we understand what you're getting at.

While we do not recommend ingesting our products, it can be safely used on a food contact surface. We even have a Food Contact Compliance from an independent testing institute (Eurofins).

No, the product is not completely VOC free.

Question 24

The surface, or part of the surface, must be covered after treatment with Oil Plus 2C. How do I do this?

Accepted Answer

Basically, this can be done with Oil Plus 2C from 48 hours after the treatment.

Use felt or corrugated cardboard (with the even side face down). Never use any kind of tape.

Please take into account that you need to add the time the surface is covered to the indicated curing time.

What is the difference between Oil Plus 2C "Pure" and "Natural"

Simply put, Pure contains no pigment and Natural contains a creamy whitish/yellowish pigment.

Which one is clear? Neither. While Pure contains no pigment, clear is not the best description because Oil Plus 2C is a linseed oil based product. Linseed oil has a naturally occurring colour to it, which will enrich/darken the wood compared to its raw state.

Keeping your wood looking natural requires introducing just enough pigment to off-set the enriching/darkening caused by using an oil-based finish. This depends on the type of wood.

What is the difference between WoodPrep vs Cleaner and should I use both or only 1?

No, after sanding you either use the regular Cleaner or the WoodPrep, but not both.

Cleaner is our standard preparatory cleaner. This product removes all the microdust that is left and prevents the oil from bonding with the dust instead of the wood fibres.

WoodPrep is also a preparatory cleaner but contrary to the regular Cleaner, this product will raise up the wood fibres. Because of this, you'll achieve a deeper colour and minimise possible sanding errors.
