Question 1

After what time do I have to apply the second coat of WoodCream at the latest, if I then want to colour it twice?

Accepted Answer

This depends a lot on the weather conditions but ideally this would be at least 3 hours after the first layer and within 24 hours. Of course, this is more a guideline than a strict deadline.

Question 2

Are the DuroGrit colours compatible with the Hybrid Wood Protector colours for maintenance purposes?

Accepted Answer

The colours are not exactly matched with the Hybrid Wood Protector, but for the natural colours we offer similar alternatives. We recommend taking a look at our DuroGrit colour advice chart for several wood species to find the colour that matches best. You can also do a test on identical sanded wood with one or more of our 30 ml packagings. For testing colours on a regular basis, our DuroGrit sample kit containing all colours in 30 ml is perfect.

Question 3

Are there WoodCream protection level details we have to consider, being in countries where the UV is higher than in the Northern Hemisphere?

Accepted Answer

Yes, please consult the maintenance and warranty instructions.

Question 4

Are WoodCream and WoodCream Softener VOC free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, WoodCream and WoodCream Softener are both VOC free.

Question 5

Besides brushes, are there other recommended WoodCream application tools? Does a roller work?

Accepted Answer

We will only recommend the WoodCream brushes. With a roller you would apply too much product.

Question 6

Can DuroGrit be applied on every wood type?

Accepted Answer

Yes.

Colour advice does vary based on wood type, so we recommend taking a look at our DuroGrit colour advice chart for several wood species to find the colour that works best for your wood type.

Question 7

Can DuroGrit be applied on interior woodwork? For example: when the customers want the interior woodwork to follow the exterior colour.

Accepted Answer

Even though it would be technically possible to use DuroGrit for interior woodwork, we do not recommend this. The product is developped for an exterior environment:

It contains a small amount of biocides to prevent fungi.
Unlike Oil Plus 2C, DuroGrit roughens the wood a bit.
With Oil Plus 2C you can have a much smoother, cleaner and brushmark-free end result, which is more desirable in an interior environment.

If you use DuroGrit for outside and Oil Plus 2C for inside, we recommend taking a look at our DuroGrit colour advice chart for several wood species to find the colour that matches best.

Question 8

Can I use Hybrid Wood Protector for interior purposes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, even though Hybrid Wood Protector is an exterior product, it can also be used indoors to treat surfaces like parquet floors, wooden bathroom furnishings and kitchen worktops. These items are often used intensively which is why it's obligatory to add 10% of Rubio Monocoat Accelerator to the oil.

Question 9

Can I use Hybrid Wood Protector on my garage door?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Apply the oil with a brush or sponge. Let the wood absorb the oil and remove the excess oil with a cloth. For more info see our article about how to apply Hybrid Wood Protector on vertical surfaces.

Question 10

Can we add B component to DuroGrit to make drying time faster and to make it stronger?

Accepted Answer

No. DuroGrit is a single component product.

Question 11

Can we apply a second layer of DuroGrit for an even better protection or more intense colour?

Accepted Answer

DuroGrit is a one layer product. When two or more coats are applied, the UV protection will be improved but the system will also become more film-forming. This might result in typical problems of film-forming systems such as flaking/peeling. In addition, the curing time will also be prolonged.

However, in exceptional cases, e.g. very grey/weathered wood, a second layer might be necessary for aesthetic reasons. The first layer will act as a primer, but due to the high and inequal absorption of the wood, a second layer will provide a more uniform colour result. In these cases we also advise diluting the DuroGrit with 20% of water. The risk of building up a thick film-forming layer here is low, because a lot of the product is absorbed into the weathered wood.

Question 12

Can we apply DuroGrit over another non-Rubio Monocoat coating?

Accepted Answer

No.

Question 13

Can we apply DuroGrit over Hybrid Wood Protector?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Make sure to use Exterior Wood Cleaner before the application with DuroGrit. Sanding the layer of Hybrid Wood Protector is not necessary, unless the Hybrid Wood Protector layer is still very present.

Keep in mind that DuroGrit is a transparant finish. This means spots where the old Hybrid Wood Protector coating is still present, will stay visible.

Question 14

Can we apply DuroGrit over WoodCream?

Accepted Answer

No.

Question 15

Can we dilute DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In case of rough/weathered wood, highly absorbent woods or to improve spreadability for terrace application, you can dilute DuroGrit with up to maximum 20% water.

Question 16

Can we ship DuroGrit during cold weather (minus degrees)?

Accepted Answer

Question 19

Can we use WoodCream for exterior furniture?

Accepted Answer

We do not recommend using WoodCream on external furniture. External furniture contains horizontal surfaces and WoodCream is recommended for vertical surfaces only.

Question 20

Can we use WoodCream only on vertical wood?

Accepted Answer

We recommend using WoodCream on exterior vertical surfaces only.

Question 21

Can WoodCream be applied on every wood type?

Accepted Answer

Yes, WoodCream can be applied on all wood types.

Question 22

Can WoodCream be applied on interior woodwork? For example when the customers want the interior woodwork to follow the exterior colour.

Accepted Answer

We do not recommend using WoodCream for interior woodwork. The product is developed especially for exterior and not suited for interior applications.

Question 23

Can you confirm that the WoodCream is a sustainable product?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the WoodCream has a very low consumption compared to similar products on the market. The WoodCream gives a durable protection with a low consumption which means that we use less resources of raw material per m² and this will lead to lower energy in transport and application. The WoodCream should not be sanded for a touch-up and therefore no sanding dust will come into the environment. And last but not least, the WoodCream is VOC free.

Question 24

Can you expand on the self-cleaning effect of WoodCream?

Accepted Answer

The self-cleaning effect refers to the water-repellent effect that will cause the water drops to pick up dirt from the surface, thereby cleaning the surface.

Question 25

Do we have to apply DuroGrit on each side of the wood? In order to give DuroGrit some tension on the wood?

Accepted Answer

You can apply DuroGrit on one side if the wood is installed. But if you apply DuroGrit on unstable or thin wood we recommend to apply it on both sides of the wood.

Question 26

Do we have to apply WoodCream on each side of the wood? In order to give WoodCream some tension on the wood?

Accepted Answer

You can apply WoodCream on just one side if the wood is installed. But if you apply WoodCream on unstable or thin wood you'd better apply it on both sides of the wood.

Question 27

Do you have any WoodCream application tools?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We have a specially developed WoodCream Brush made of polyester fibre to make sure that you don't leave any brush marks and that the product doesn't dry on the brush easily. You can use the brush on both smooth and rough surfaces.

WoodCream Brush is available in 3 different widths: 1”, 2” and 3”.

Question 28

Does the addition of Open Time Extender affect the UV and/or mechanical resistance of DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

No, but make sure to add no more than 10%.

Question 29

Does the Open Time Extender also affect the spreadability of DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

No. If you need to improve spreadability (i.e. on rough wood or for terrace application), add up to maximum 20% of water.

Question 30

Does WoodCream protect against sun's UV rays?

Accepted Answer

Yes, WoodCream protects against UV rays, however maintenance is needed. Please consult the maintenance and warranty instructions.

Attention, a transparent version (#0) is also available in order to create a non-coloured effect. This version is an exception and has no UV filter. Since this is the case, Transparent (#0) allows the wood to age naturally while still protecting the wood and making it water-repellent.

Question 31

Does WoodCream Softener expire after 4 hours or can it stay mixed for a longer period?

Accepted Answer

No, once WoodCream Softener is mixed with WoodCream, it will stay stable for weeks.

Question 32

How can I remove stains from spilled DuroGrit product on non-targeted adjacent areas?

Accepted Answer

First of all, protect the adjacent areas from spilled product by using plastic, cardboard or tape to cover up risk areas.

If some product is spilled despite this, immediately remove the spilled material from non-targeted areas with soap and water. Product that is allowed to dry will be difficult to remove.

Question 33

How can we clean a surface treated with DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Only use Exterior Soap (Ecospray) or All Natural Wood Cleaner (Spray). Do not use other cleaning products.

Question 34

How can we clean brushes and tools that were used to apply DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Clean them with water, immediately after use.

After multiple uses, the bristles of the brushes may start to feel a bit “oily” or sitff. In that case, you can clean the brushes also with warm (not hot!) water and mild soap or dish detergent. Another option is to use a bit of Exterior Wood Cleaner and water. The product will come off much faster than with just plain water. Repeat the soaking and swishing process until the water runs clear. Rinse well with clean water.

Question 35

How can we clean the WoodCream brushes?

Accepted Answer

WoodCream is a water-based product, so the brushes can easily be cleaned with water.

Question 36

How can we dispose of DuroGrit and empty packagings after usage?

Accepted Answer

Dispose of residue and empty packaging in accordance with local ordinances.

Question 37

How can we remove overlapping of DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Small errors can be touched-up on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application, depending on the weather conditions. Apply a bit of extra DuroGrit with a brush. Put some pressure with your brush to dissolve and mix the old product with the new one. Go over it several times and smooth out.

If you are too late and the surface is already dry, you can remove the overlap by lightly manually sanding the product away in the direction of the grain and applying some new product. It is best to do such a correction before the product is completely cured (e.g. during the installation and not a few days later).

Question 38

How long can we store DuroGrit once mixed with Open Time Extender?

Accepted Answer

After mixing, the product can still be stored for months in frost-free and dry conditions (temp. 5°C - 25°C or 41°F - 77°F).

Question 39

How long can WoodCream be exposed in sunlight before it discolours?

Accepted Answer

This will depend on the climate and orientation. Please consult the maintenance and warranty instructions.

Question 40

How long do we have to wait until boards treated with DuroGrit are stackable?

Accepted Answer

As soon as the boards are dry to touch they can be stacked on each other. However, make sure to put a paper between the boards.

Question 41

How long does Hybrid Wood Protector last?

Accepted Answer

Wooden surfaces oiled with Hybrid Wood Protector will require maintenance and attention more often than interior surfaces due to exterior exposure harshness. The geographical location, the wood type and the colour of the oil will dictate the frequency of reoiling!

In general, a horizontal exposed wood substrate will weather approximately four times faster than a vertical exposed substrate in the same location.

Even though we recommend an annual visual check-up, horizontal surfaces like patios and exterior furniture should have maintenance every year, whereas vertical surfaces only every 3 to 5 years.

Maintenance is done with Hybrid Wood Protector in the original colour. Sanding will not be necessary but always clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner prior to applying a new layer of oil.

Question 42

How long does the WoodCream last?

Accepted Answer

Rubio Monocoat provides a 10-year guarantee on: a long-lasting wood protection that will not flake off, colour retention and water-repellent effect. All colours are covered by the guarantee, with exception of the colour Transparent #0.

However, a regular maintenance is needed. Please consult the maintenance and warranty instructions for all details.

Question 43

How long is the normal shelf life of DuroGrit (in unopened condition)?

Accepted Answer

24 months, if stored in frost-free and dry conditions (temp. 5-25°C).

Question 44

How long is the normal shelf life of WoodCream (in unopened condition)?

Accepted Answer

The product can be stored up to 24 months. Store in dry conditions and in the original unopened packaging.

Keep away from frost.

Question 45

How many colours of WoodCream exist?

Accepted Answer

27 colours, available in 3 different collections: The Grey Collection, The Traditional Collection, and The Scandinavian Collection.

Colours can be mixed with each other to create new ones.

Question 46

How many layers of WoodCream do you need to apply?

Accepted Answer

WoodCream can be applied in 1 or 2 layers depending on the look you want. A second layer can be applied after at least 3 hours and within 24 hours after the first layer.

In case of renovation on older non-Rubio Monocoat products we always advise to apply two layers to avoid gloss differences between raw wood and patches where the old coating was still present.

We also advise to always dilute WoodCream with WoodCream Softener for the second layer.

Question 47

How many product of DuroGrit is used m²/L?

Accepted Answer

8-15 m²/litre.

Consumption strongly depends on the type of wood, weathering and preparation. Old wood, wood that has been left untreated outdoors or grooved wood often absorbs more product. Therefore always purchase slightly more product than the recommended liter per m². You can use the leftover to maintain and touch up the surface with the same product.

In exceptional cases, e.g. on very weathered or highly absorbing wood consumption can be twice as high (even up to 6 m²/liter). In these cases, adding up to maximum 20% water can help control the spread rate.

Question 48

How many WoodCream product is used m²/L?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the type of substrate: 12-20 m²/L.

These usages are merely indicative. Results depend on wood type and method of preparation. It is always recommended to make a sample in order to calculate the exact usage.

Question 49

How should we handle a renovation with DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and re-apply DuroGrit in the original colour. Depending on the degree of fading of the colour, dilute DuroGrit with maximum 20% water to avoid applying too much product and making the colour too opaque.

Question 50

If I apply WoodCream, is an additional product needed for fungicide protection? Is there a certification for WoodCream against wood-destroying fungi, such as blue stain fungus?

Accepted Answer

No, there is no certification but there are already strong biocides in WoodCream. However, we advise a minimum wood class in our warranty instructions.

If a better protection is needed, we would advise you to choose impregnated wood, copper-based (which you can recognize because of its green colour).

If you still want to apply an extra coat of fungicide, we would advise you to use a product with IPBC.

Question 51

Is DuroGrit a single component product?

Accepted Answer

Yes.

Question 52

Is DuroGrit compatible with insecticide and fungicide treatments that are mandatory for some woodwork?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as it is not film-building, it should be compatible with DuroGrit.

Question 53

Is DuroGrit compatible with Sunprimer HWP?

Accepted Answer

No.

Question 54

Is it possible to mix DuroGrit colours?

Accepted Answer

In theory, it is possible to mix DuroGrit colours with each other. However, these new combinations may not give the same durable protection as our standard colours and may fade at a more rapid pace. Since these have not been tested in our laboratory for durability, we cannot give guarantees for this.

Question 55

Is it possible to mix WoodCream colours?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is possible to mix the colours with each other.

Question 56

Is it really required to let new wood age for 4-6 weeks before applying DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

This is more of a recommendation than a hard rule. It mostly depends on the particular wood used.

For example, fresh cumaru wood would definitely benefit from a few weeks of weathering to rinse out the extracts that the wood contains. After all, these might soften the coating when they migrate into the wood. Other wood species such as pine or ipé seem to be less sensitive to this.

We recommend that you test your local wood species or send a few samples to our lab to estimate if this is required in your particular situation.

Question 57

Is Part B Accelerator required for Hybrid Wood Protector?

Accepted Answer

Up to 10% Part B Accelerator should be added to Hybrid Wood Protector for all horizontal surfaces and also in combination with Sunprimer HWP.

Question 58

Is the warranty altered when using WoodCream Softener?

Accepted Answer

Yes, please consult the maintenance and warranty instructions.

Question 59

Is there also danger for auto-combustion with DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

No. DuroGrit is a water-based product and is not made with linseed oil. Therefore, there is no risk of auto-combustion.

Question 60

Is WoodCream VOC free?

Accepted Answer

Yes.

Question 61

On the wooden colour fans, what is the ratio of WoodCream Softener that is added? And in how many layers is WoodCream applied?

Accepted Answer

On the colour fan of the Grey Collection, one side is treated without WoodCream Softener and one side is treated with a 1:1 ratio WoodCream Softener and WoodCream.

Question 62

What are the differences between the WoodCream and Hybrid Wood Protector?

Accepted Answer

For finishing exterior walls, garden sheds and gates, wood is being used increasingly more, often combined with other materials. The wood can be protected in various ways, depending on the desired result.

Rubio Monocoat has had Hybrid Wood Protector in its assortment with great success for years. It is a high-quality oil that protects and colours the exterior wood (horizontal and vertical) in one coat thanks to the special Rubio Monocoat technology. Hybrid Wood Protector is available in 20 colours.

But the Rubio Monocoat lab has also developed WoodCream, an innovative wax cream for a long-lasting, breathable, and water-repelling protection of wood. WoodCream is available in 27 colours and can be applied in one or more layers to achieve a semi-transparent, aged, or covering look on vertical exterior wood.

Question 63

What are the general maintenance instructions for the WoodCream?

Accepted Answer

In general we recommend a yearly visual check-up just after winter season. Please check for the presence of the following three points:

a. Dirt & green deposits; clean with low pressure water and soft brush

b. Fading out of colours

c. Diminishing pearl effect

If necessary (concerning point b./c.) apply a maintenance coat according to the instructions. The frequency of maintenance depends on the weather conditions:

In normal weather conditions: every 5 years
In extreme weather conditions: every 3 years
In ideal circumstances, this can take significantly longer: up to 10 years

Normal climates: when the colour fades, apply a maintenance coat of WoodCream with WoodCream Softener in a ratio from 9 parts WoodCream and 1 part WoodCream Softener to 1 part WoodCream and 1 part WoodCream Softener in order to achieve the desired result. Consult the technical data sheet for more information.

Frequency according to exposure, geographical situation, solar orientation of the treated wood, wood type, and desired shade. Waterfront, seaside, pilling, wetland, marshland, … sometimes require a more frequent maintenance.

Question 64

What are the minimum and maximum temperatures in which we can apply DuroGrit?

Accepted Answer

Do not apply below 10°C or above 30°C.
